Astrocartography Lines Explained

Your astrocartography map overlays 40 planetary lines across the globe — each one marking a place where a specific planet holds a specific power over your life. Here is what each line means.

The Four Line Types

MC

Midheaven (MC)

Career · Recognition · Public Life

The MC line passes through places where a planet was at your Midheaven at birth — the highest point in the sky, associated with your public life, career, reputation, and how the world sees you. Cities on or near your MC lines tend to amplify your visibility and professional drive.

IC

Imum Coeli (IC)

Home · Roots · Private Sanctuary

Opposite the MC, the IC is the lowest point in the sky — your private foundation, ancestral roots, and sense of belonging. Cities near your IC lines often feel deeply familiar, like coming home, and support emotional restoration and inner work.

AC

Ascendant (AC)

Identity · Vitality · First Impressions

The AC line marks where a planet was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. In these places, the planet's energy comes through you directly — affecting your physical vitality, how others perceive you, and how fully you inhabit yourself.

DC

Descendant (DC)

Relationships · Partnerships · What You Attract

The DC is the point of the setting horizon — the house of partnerships and what we meet in others. Near DC lines, the planet's energy is projected onto your relationships. You tend to attract people and situations that embody that planetary quality strongly.

Common Questions

How close to a line do I need to be to feel its effect?

Most astrocartographers suggest that lines within 700 km (roughly 400 miles) are active, with the strongest influence within 200 km. The closer you are, the more intense the energy — for better or for worse.

Can a line be both good and challenging?

Always. Every planetary line carries its full spectrum. A Jupiter line brings expansion — but also overconfidence. A Saturn line builds mastery — but demands patience and hard work first. Context, timing, and your own chart modify the experience.

What if multiple lines cross near a city?

Line crossings create what are called "power zones" — places where multiple planetary energies concentrate simultaneously. These tend to be high-intensity locations with multi-dimensional influence.

Do lines change over time?

Your natal astrocartography lines are fixed — they're calculated from the moment of your birth. However, progressed and transit astrocartography create shifting overlays that evolve as you age. Beorra currently shows natal lines.

Is this the same as relocation astrology?

Astrocartography is a specific technique within relocation astrology, developed by Jim Lewis in the 1970s. It projects natal planetary angles onto a world map. Relocation astrology more broadly includes re-casting your entire chart for a new location.
